Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 1 analysis:

According to the Independent:

Nothing so freighted with expectation could possibly live up to it, and the first episode of season eight doesn’t.

This episode doesn’t do much of that at all. In most respects, it is a classic opening throat-clearer, clocking in at just 50 minutes without adverts and bringing us up to speed.

Frankly, there isn’t much going on, compared to previous episode ones. The new title sequence shows us the gaping big hole in the Wall, through which the Night King’s armies are flooding.

At Winterfell, where everyone except for Cersei and a few Greyjoys has gathered, there is grouse but no real beef between the various former mortal enemies.

At this point I’m afraid it’s impossible to care whether the Karstarks are joining.

Review from IndieWire who gave GOT season 8 episode 1 a B- grade:

Premiere Is Fun Yet Frustrating as Anticipation Builds for the Conflicts to Come

“Game of Thrones,” long known for taking its viewers by surprise, returned for its final season premiere Sunday night with a shocking twist: jokes!

The one-hour episode was surprisingly lighthearted, and full of witty moments, which will no doubt anger the more bloodthirsty fans who want sword-fighting and dragon-fire now.

GOT season 8 episode 1 review from Time.com:

It was a moment fans had been waiting for since the first Obama administration—and it was frustratingly anticlimactic.

Maybe that was because Arya and Sansa’s reconciliation at the end of last season, over the deliciously dead body of Littlefinger, set such a high bar for homecomings.

But even under different circumstances, it’s hard to imagine being satisfied with a premiere that broke almost every reunion (plus a few crucial introductions) into either a quick, quippy tease or several minutes of mostly unnecessary exposition.

Add to that the cringey awkwardness of just about every scene between lovers, and Game of Thrones has kicked off its final season by amplifying many of the past few seasons’ worst mistakes.
